The pro-EU lot haven't exactly won the argument, despite decades of government officials trying to promote our membership.
From their vantage points in the Foreign Office, left-wing academia, quango land and the BBC, the fed heads might be able to ensure our absorption into the EU continues - but they've not brought the people with them.
According to YouGov, a record 47% of people now want out, with only 33% prepared to remain members of the EU. "We are the people of England; and we have not spoken yet"
Sooner or later the political elite are going to have to give us that referendum on our EU membership .....
UPDATE: Interestingly, an ex-Whitehall official makes a gloriously asinine attempt to explain why the people can't possibly be trusted with an EU referendum here.
Do read it - not so much for the "we-know-what's-best" tone of the technocratic author, but for the hundreds of readers responses. It vividly shows the gap between the governed and the governing.
