One of my Essex constituents today lets me know what she thinks about the Foreign Secretary’s dismissal of the case for an In / Out EU vote:
“William Hague does not want there to be a referendum on Europe.
Well he does not have to vote then. He can abstain.”
I sense the public mood in the country is shifting - and not just about Europe. The era of deferential democracy is over. I suspect we will see a lot more direct democracy about many more things regardless of what politicians might prefer.
