Best wishes for St George's Day!

File:Flag of England.svg File:Royal Banner of England.svgWhat is the symbol of England?  Is it the red cross of St George, a symbol of England since the thirteenth century?  What about the Royal Banner of three lions?

Given that England has been going a lot longer than the St George's Cross, I wonder what symbolised England before then.  And is it really appropriate that the English, of all people, should take as their symbol the heraldic logo of a ruling elite?  I wonder what visual representations we used to symbolise England before 1066?

What other historic or modern symbols Englishness would you like to see used as well?  Over to you ....
