Blundering into bailouts

"All too often in government the really important decisions slip past you without you realising it, and the true significance of what you have done only dawns on you when it is too late" - Jonathan Powell in The New Machiavelli.

Is that what happened with the Euro bailouts? In those first few halcyon days in office, Coalition ministers allowed British participation in the bailout Mechanism to stand.  Maybe even, you know, okayed it?  Just following official advice, rah rah, etc etc.

Twelve months on the "true significance" is becoming clear; £ Billion liabilities that dwarf all the painful savings we've made to curb the deficit.  And Britain drawn into a system of pan- EU economic management.
