Conference season and reality

At this time of year, the political classes have traditionally talked to themselves in Bournemouth and Blackpool - and more recently, from Manchester and Birmingham. 

During the party conferences we hear lots of talk about what needs to be done and how doing it will make things better.  Maybe.      

But this year, I fear there has been a sense of unreality about the speeches we have heard so far.  No matter what the SW1 people talk about, there is a great debt bubble looming over us all.  I fear it will be the arithmetic of the bond market and those inescapable economic truths we have kept buried for so long, not those we elect, who will be shaping a lot of public policy pretty soon.

l recommend you read Jeff Randall's Telegraph article:  "The fallacy at the heart of this crisis is that every financial problem has a political solution."  That tells us almost everything we need to know. 

It seems as if many politicians still don't get this.  The money has run out and we cannot borrow our way back to prosperity. 

Last week in Birmingham, and this week in Liverpool, politicians keep talking as if they can legislate to change the laws of maths.
