Damned if they do. Damned if they don't

Today the head honcho of Barclays Bank, Bob Diamond, was berated by MPs for not being "grateful" to the taxpayer. 

If Barclays had received giant dollops of taxpayer money, I could see their point.  But, if I remember correctly, wasn't Barclays actually one of the few banks not to take public money?  In fact, as I recall they specifically turned it down - to the dismay of the "bail out" brigade in Westminster.   

Back in October 2008, MPs - led by Vince Cable - were busy attacking Barclays for refusing to accept a government bail out.     

The one thing in a bigger muddle than British banking is our politicians thinking about it.
