Economic recovery - what will it take?

A growth strategy with too little growth. The IMF has downgraded UK growth forecasts.

A debt reduction strategy that does not reduce debt. Public sector borrowing for August was 15.9 billion, the highest monthly borrowing ever.

A deficit cutting strategy that does not cut the deficit. Government over spent by 500 million every day last month.

And all the while the Bank of England keeps interest rates ruinously low and threatens to print yet more money.

Perhaps it is time for the government to do more than simply stick with the economic policies it inherited from Labour? Now might be the time to change direction rather than tweek a little what Alistair Darling was already more or less doing?

It might be time to shake up a Treasury mandarinate whose thinking about economic management seems only capable of offering variants of the same.

Changing the rhetoric doesn't seem to have been enough.
