ERM mark 2?

"British taxpayers" writes Paul Goodman "are going to be hit.  And the .... billions of pounds [in Eurozone bailouts] that they'll lose are the price which Ministers are prepared to pay for the avoidance of blame."

I can already hear the whine of Westminster excuse-making;  "But we followed the official advice".  "It was only a contingent liability".  "It was Alistair who signed us up to it - it's all his fault".  "How were we to know?".  Blah blah blah.

If the current administration was so against the liabilities the previous administration is supposed to have landed us with, why promote the official who helped get us into this mess

As the inevitability of a default becomes clear to anyone willing to think for themselves, why imply those of us who question the wisdom of doubling the UK taxpayers exposure to IMF-led Eurozone bailouts must be anti-IMF?  Why brief the press that we have "all the facts wrong"?

Those we elect to lead should not slavishly follow the advice of the unelected.  Rather they should think for themselves and act in the national interest - not the Whitehall comfort zone.

It's not only the credibility of Greek bonds that is about to be tested.

Shades of ERM?
