Euro delusion

German finance minister, Wolfgang Schauble, has apparently said that Britain will be forced to scrap the pound and join the Euro.

Herr Schauble's comments tell us little about the future of Europe's currencies, and a lot about the European elite's frame of mind. Pity the millions of hard working Europeans, their future prosperity mortgaged to keep alive the monetary monster, governed by these sort of people.

Faced with overwhelming evidence that trying to arrange Europe's affairs by grand design has failed, what do those in charge do? They double dose on the original dogma of European integration that got them in to the mess the start with. Whatever the problem, they demand more Europe, an ever grander design.

When the history of the EU is written, historians will marvel at the way it managed to reinforce failure. Prudent nations are punished. Those who over spend rewarded. Bad ideas exported between member states, good innovations strangled by the Brussels machine.

What delusions and dogma allowed this? What prevented European leaders doing anything about it?

They will find a clue in Herr Schauble.
