
For all the talk of cutting the deficit, the short fall between what HMG spends and what it takes in tax doesn’t seem to me to have come down by much.

Worse, despite all the talk of reining in public finances, the amount of public debt in Britain grew by 18 percent over the past year - see the graph on the right. House of Commons Library data shows that from March 2010 to March 2011 (the last month for which figures are available), public sector net debt increased by £143 Billion, from £760 Billion to £903 Billion.
We do indeed have a deficit the size of Portugal’s – and like our oldest ally, the amount our government owes is growing much faster than our economy.
