Neither of the Coalition parties promised us today's wretched AV referendum in their election manifestos. Cooked up by politicians looking to do a deal in Whitehall last May, today's vote has failed to capture the public's imagination.
But what if today's referendum had been about Europe, an issue that increasingly matters to millions?
The Lib Dems specifically promised an In / Out EU vote in their manifesto last year. The Conservatives gave a guarantee they'd hold one on the Lisbon Treaty (under article 122 of which we are required to spend £ billions bailing out the Euro).
Now that we can all see how easy and straight forward holding a referendum can be, please sign the People's Pledge demanding an In / Out vote on Britain's EU membership.
Imagine - no more bailouts. No more Euro regulation and red tape. No more need to kow tow to loony Euro courts. No more EU defence and foreign policy. No more handing over policy control to those we did not elect. No more ready-made excuses from our own politicians. Just free trade.
Unless, of course, you disagree and think our EU membership benefits the UK. But, either way, it'd be for all of us - not just that smug, self regarding "elite" in the Foreign Office and Westminster - to decide.
