In / Out referendum: the dam begins to crumble

Mark Pritchard MP, a member of the 1922 executive in the Commons, outlines the case for an EU referendum in today's Telegraph.

Until this morning about 1 in 10 MPs had signed up to the In / Out Group calling for a public vote.  Mark's article is significant because it shows there is now momentum in the numbers.  

But more importantly, perhaps it underlines that being a Eurosceptic now necessarily means wanting a referendum.  Or rather, it means no longer being prepared to trust the SW1 people to decide on these things.

The culture of political deference has gone.  

The Whitehall mandarins and Westminster ministers who landed us in this Euro mess cannot be trusted to make Euro policy any longer.  When we left EU policy to the elite, they locked us into an economic trade block that loses world trade.  They made us bailout a currency we chose not to join.  

Last summer, they actually signed us up to a system of pan-EU economic governance that means our own budgets are overseen by the kind of people who've been running Greece and Italy for the past decade.   

Any new deal with Europe must be put to the people in a vote.
