Is it really worth staying inside the EU?

Alisdair Palmer asks a question that is increasingly being raised in an excellent article in the Sunday Telegraph; should we quit the EU?

In my view, there are basically two types of politician; those who primarily seek office and those who seek to make things happen.

In pursuit of office, many politicians compromise when it comes to what they'd otherwise believe should happen.  When they get there, they tend to implement other people's ideas or stick with Sir Humphrey's advice.  The other kind of politician compromises on their chances of holding office in defence of what they believe needs to happen.

Arguing that one sort is more influential than the other is rather like debating if it is the script writer, or the actor who delivers his lines, who determines what makes a box office triumph.  You need both.

Sooner or later, if either type of politician wants either office or to achieve things, they'll need to confront the issue of our EU membership.  That suggests to me that an In / Out EU referendum is coming ....
