Libya policy has been a mess

British foreign policy towards Libya looks to have been pretty disastrous.

For years we suck up to the tyrants of Tripoli.  Images of Blair and co shaking hands with the rulers who gave us Lockerbie make us look irresolute.  Our own moral disarmament can only have discouraged any anti-Gaddafi dissidents – and reformists across the Arab world.

Various members of the SW1 tribe have enjoyed Saif Gaddafi's company, if not hospitality, I'm told.

Now we threaten the Gaddafi regime ineffectually.

We would have vastly greater moral authority if we had not sold out our Libya policy to an assortment of corporate oil interests and retired diplomats on their pay roll.

It is not UN resolutions we have been lacking, but our own resolve.
