Mandarin spin

According to Alex Barker in today’s FT, Sir Jon Cunliffe, the soon-to-be-appointed ambassador to the EU, has a “talent for saying no through endless hours of late-night negotiations” in Brussels.

What a pity Cunliffe didn’t manage to say “no” at the Ecofin meeting on May 9^th last year where Britain agreed to join the Eurozone bailout scheme. Or at the Ecofin meeting that followed a week later, which bound Britain into the pan-EU budget setting process. 

Rather than brief friendly journalists baloney about how tough Sir Jon is as a negotiator, why not put him in front of a Commons confirmation hearing so we can cross examine him to find out precisely whose idea it was to sign Britain up to these things?
