In 1998 William Hague described the Euro as a “burning building”.
You’d think the obvious thing to do now might be to help our neighbours get out of the burning building.
But no. Instead ministers keeping giving us the mandarin mantra about the success of the Euro being in our national interest.
Is it really in our interest to see the Euro propped up at any price?
How is it in our national interest to consign millions of Europeans to life under a monetary regime that will guarantee stagnation and debt for decades to come? Not really good for trade, is it?
And since when was it in our long term strategic interest to see southern European states denied democratic choices?
If the 17 Eurozone members fuse into a EU core, how will Britain ever be able to say "no" to anything ever again?
Those who say "yes" to fiscal union in the Eurozone simply have not thought through the consequences on financial service regulation, supply side reform and economic governance.
Not for the first time, establishment opinion is hopelessly on the wrong side of events.
