MP keeps promise - SHOCK

An MP is rumoured to have kept a promise they made to voters, according to latest reports in Westminster. 

Speculation has mounted throughout the day as to the identity of the promise keeper.  “We’re working on the assumption that this is a one off, probably just one of those cranky backbencher types” explained one insider. “ The kind who say stuff like “I believe” etc like they really mean it”.

Others played down the significance saying “This probably won’t harm the Coalition. In fact, it strengthens the case for elevating the Coalition agreement document to constitutional status. Moreover, this shows why we were right to hold a referendum on AV”.

The pre-election promise is not thought to relate to any commitments given on prison sentences for knife crime, repatriating power from Brussels, tuition fees or plans to raise VAT.    

“It’s all very well for some MPs to start keeping their promises,” complained one. “But that creates enormous pressure on the rest of us. Where will that take us?”

Many constitutional experts regard honoured promises as a highly unusual innovation. “Our unique system of Parliamentary democracy has evolved over the years to prevent things like this” suggested one. 

“If you want to get anywhere in Westminster, you more or less have to ditch what you believe, and instead simply stick to the script the Sir Humphrey-types give you. If being in a Coalition makes it easier to do that, then that shows how well the system works” .
