No gloating

But the thought of only a couple of Lib Dem councillors left in my Essex patch leaves me struggling to suppress a smile.

Will the Coalition in Westminster survive?  Of course.  No matter what happens in the world outside, Lib Dem MPs in Westminster are too much in love with their red ministerial boxes and chauffeur driven cars. 

No matter how grim things get, they’ll always find reasons to convince themselves that their position in government is somehow indispensible.  Like the force of gravity, self-importance exercises a constant pull on all objects in the political solar system.

In return for their electoral collapse, I suppose Lib Dems will be “given” House of Lords reform.  Good.  And about time too.  I pushed David Cameron on Lord’s reform at his first ever Prime Ministers Question Time – and was told plans would be published before (last) Christmas.

By all means reward the Lib Dems recent failures with Lords reform. Just don’t give them even greater scope to veto the rest of the Coalition’s reformist agenda .....
