As well as voting against giving prisoners the right to vote, I have just signed Anne Main MP's excellent amendment for tomorrow's debate.

It proposes that prisoners denied the vote may not be paid compensation by any court on the basis of being denied the vote - notwithstanding the European Convention of Human Rights or any other such treaty.

What do you suppose might happen if, once the Commons has made plain its view, a minister - egged on perhaps by his civil servants - were to disregard Parliament and comply with the Strasbourg court anyhow?  Whose confidence would they still then command?  

Time to re-establish the supremacy of the people's elected legislature - and tell the European court to go hang get stuffed.
