Out is on the agenda

“The revolt against human rights law” writes John Rentoul in today’s Independent "is now bound up in a form of British Euroscepticism that is edging towards what would have seemed just three years ago an extreme – even extremist – scenario, of withdrawing from the EU and repudiating the European Court of Human Rights”.

Perhaps the idea that we might be a self-governing country once again only seems extreme if you've spent too long looking at the world from inside SW1? 

In the country beyond, these ideas are common currency – and have been for some time. Moreover, they are the views of moderate, sensible, broad-minded people a million miles away from the Guardianista stereotype of a Eurosceptic.

To use the French term, the pays légal – that world of politicians, media commentators, mandarins, bank bosses – are finally having to catch up with the pays réel – the rest of us. 

A good thing, too.
