Every so often you read a piece of news that seems to cheer you up for no apparent reason. I can't quite put my finger on why, but the announcement that the Queen is to visit Ireland pleases me enormously.
Perhaps it is a sense that at last our two countries can get along as equals. We can all move on from the consequences of the historic mistake that was made when peers rejected Gladstone's Home Rule Bill.
Alternatively, it might simply be that I love Ireland and am pleased that the Queen will get to enjoy it too.
