Spiv defined

“One who shirks work or responsibility”, according to one definition in my dictionary.

Didn’t politicians shirk responsibility when they handed control over monetary policy to a committee of experts on the Monetary Policy Committee? 

They were happy to take credit when all that artificially cheap money made everyone feel rich. I even remember them bickered over who first thought of giving the MPC control.

But I don’t see too many of them now admitting that artificially cheap money gave us credit boom, followed by crunch. 

Rather than take responsibility, or question their lemming-like faith in credit expansion to solve every economic ill, many politicians are reduced to the ultimate kind of spivery; bashing bankers for failing to lend enough, while hinting that government might ration credit.
