Tendring Council - first clear majority for twenty years

Hours of campaigning - and a distinctive, localist agenda for change - seem to have paid off in this part of Essex. After some knife-edge recounts, we have a workable majority - for the first time since at least 1991.

Well done to all our team - some brilliant wins - especially in Walton and north Clacton! Commisserations to those who didn't make it - some by only a handful of votes.

The past few days of door-knocking and leafleting have been great fun. As the local MP, I look forward to working with all the newly elected councillors to make certain we now deliver the change Tendring needs.

I've often commented on this blog about the way in which generic brand politics is gradually giving way to the politics of the niche, the particular and the distinctive. In these local elections in this part of Essex, folk really seemed to vote on the basis of the candidate, not merely the party. Or at least to a much greater extent than previously. A sign of things to come?
