“If the European Union could monetise the value of the credibility it has destroyed it would be the richest organisation on earth”. So said a fund manager, not normally the most eloquent of professionals, quoted in the Telegraph.
He might have added that if we could restore to Europe the dynamism that government by Brussels has suffocated, Europe would still be prosperous. If we could reverse decades of technocratic rules and micro regulation, Europeans would still create wealth. If we halted and reversed the relentless march towards European harmonisation, Europe might still be the global centre of innovation and creativity it once was.
But we can't. The European Union is suffocating Europe, destroying our prosperity and consigning us to the global slow lane. We are fast becoming the economic "also rans".
