The People's Pledge

I'm on the 29th floor of Millbank Tower for the launch of the People's Pledge, the new campaign for an EU referendum.

What's so refreshing about today is the line up of those leading the call to let the people decide. Not a blazer or panama hat in sight.

Instead, there's support from Caroline Lucas, the first Green MP. And Zac Goldsmith, who campaigns for democratic renewal. As well as London Assembly Representative, Jenny Jones, and Labour MPs Kate Hoey, John Cryer and Kelvin Hopkins. There's even backing from pro-Brussels, former Europe minister, Keith Vaz.

In or out, left or right, they all agree that when it comes to being part of the EU, it's right for the people to decide.

For generations we've left Europe policy to Westminster politicians and Whitehall diplomats. We now need a referendum so the rest of us can have our say.

Unlike this May's AV referendum, which wasn't in either Coalition parties manifesto, all three parties promised us a vote on Europe.

Building up an online network of supporters in every Parliamentary constituency might just help focus a few minds in Westminster.

So why don't you join the campaign today? Sign up at peoplespledge.org
