Whitehall is wrong about democracy - again

Following the Arab spring, our government now urges Arab governments to become more accountable to the people.  Yet at the same time, ministers support the creation of a European fiscal union, which would make European governments much less accountable to their people.

For years, the Whitehall / Westminster establishment that decides "our" policy on these things got it spectacularly wrong about democracy and the Middle East.  They seem to be equally wrong-headed about the creation of a European monetary monster across the Channel.  

Curiously, they simply do not seem to see how a European fiscal union would not be in the interests of the millions of people trapped inside it.
