Why promote the official behind the disastrous bailout deal?

Over on Conservative Home, I've an article asking why we're about to promote one of the key officials behind the bailout deal as our next ambassador to the EU.

In my Westminster Hall debate today, I will be proposing that those we elect - rather than Whitehall grandees - need to have the final say before officials are appointed to negotiate on behalf of Britain.

It's not as if those watery-eyed officials ever seem to secure us a good deal from Brussels, but rather a long march of defeat and retreat.

Unchecked by Parliamentary oversight, our salaried officials negotiating with Brussels last May managed to make us liable for bailing out a common currency of which we are not even a part.
