Why the Euro federalists keep winning

Ever wondered why there's been a change of government, but no change of policy direction on Europe?

Have a look at the job description of the UK's most senior diplomat in Brussels, Sir Kim Darroch.

It clearly says "the skills required for the period 2008-11 should reflect an emphasis on deepening and reinforcing existing trends and arrangements".

There you have it.  The ministers might have changed in May, but the permanent officials are busy "reinforcing existing trends".  I suppose that is one way of describing the extension of EU economic governance and our participation in the Eurozone bailout.

It is clearly not simply because we are in Coalition that we have the Euro policy that we do.  Even before the General Election - and irrespective of the outcome of it - the permanent Eurocracy in the Foreign Office was expecting a "deeping and reinforcing of existing trends".  No wonder the government is Eurosceptic in name only ....

It is officials, like Sir Kim, we must start holding to account.
