Why we need direct democracy

Should you need reminding why we need direct democracy and radical localism, read Tim Luckhurst's article in today's Mail on Sunday.

The smug, self-regarding leftist elite that preside over all those quangos that really run Britain can only be taken on if they are made to answer directly to the rest of us.  To make that happen, we need direct democracy and - where possible - power devolved to the local level.  As the AV referendum shows, the leftist elite can be beaten when the rest of us are allowed a say.

Direct democracy means politics would once again be about deciding public policy - not just deciding who gets to be the salesman / apologist for what the ruling elite decide we need.
