You can't trust SW1 on Europe

Remember how we were promised a referendum on Europe? All three parties told us the people should have a direct say.

Remember how when the government broke that promise they said they'd give us a "referendum lock" instead? Oh yes! It'd stop further transfers of power. Blah blah.

Except today we discover there will indeed be further EU treaty changes - but no referendum. So much for that "referendum lock".

Instead today we get lots of lawyerly small print about how this isn't actually a transfer of power. Didn't you know? So no need for that "referendum lock" to be triggered. Ho ho.

Once again SW1 people have deliberately used words to create the impression of an assurance that they are now only too quick to explain was never made. They use words as a conjurer might use mirrors. But the crowd are not entertained. Their patience is wearing thin at being taken for fools for too long.

The lesson to draw from today is simple; you cannot trust SW1 people on Europe. And if they won't deal straight with you, how can we possibly leave it to them to cut any new deal with Europe?

Only an In / Out referendum will do. Sign up today at www.PeoplesPledge.org
