Belt Squeaking? Need Help Figuring It Out!

I’ve recently started noticing a squeaking noise coming from what seems to be one of the belts in my car. It usually happens when I start the engine or if I accelerate a bit harder. Here are some details:

  • Car Make/Model: 2015 Honda Accord
  • Mileage: 80,000 miles
  • Known Issues: Just changed the oil and had a full inspection a month ago, nothing major was noted.

I’ve done some reading and it sounds like it could be related to the serpentine belt or possibly the tensioner.

Questions:

  • What are some common causes of a squeaking belt?
  • Could ignoring this lead to more serious problems?
  • What steps should I take to diagnose the issue?
  • Any personal experiences or tips on how to fix it myself?

I appreciate any advice or insights you have. Thanks in advance!

I’ve dealt with a squeaky belt before! Most of the time, it can be due to wear and tear. When was the last time you replaced your belts?

I replaced mine last year, but it started squeaking again. Could it be misaligned?

I’ve adjusted the tension on my belts before; it made a big difference! Just make sure you do it carefully.

Misalignment can definitely cause that issue! It might help to check the belt tension as well. Has anyone had success with tension adjustments?

What if the tension seems fine, but it’s still squeaking? Any other factors I should consider?

Low tension can be a sneaky culprit, but also check for debris in the pulley system. That can cause belts to slip and squeak.

True, I once had dirt blocking the tensioner! After cleaning it, the squeaking vanished. It’s worth a look.

Glad it worked for you, Cynthia! I’ve heard some say just to throw on some WD-40, but that doesn’t seem right. Thoughts?

Using WD-40 isn’t a long-term fix! It might silence the squeak temporarily, but it can deteriorate the belt over time.

Thanks for the heads up! I was considering that route, but now I’ll avoid it.

I think if the belt is beyond repair, it might just need a complete replacement. Has anyone had to replace their belt and experienced no more issues?

Absolutely! After replacing my squeaky belt, my car’s been quiet as a mouse. Definitely worth it if it’s showing significant wear.

Totally agree! Sometimes it’s better to just get a new one than chase after repairs.

If you’re still stumped, you might need to consult a mechanic. A fresh set of eyes can often pinpoint issues we miss.

I’ve had a squeaking belt before! First, check the belt tension. If it’s too loose, it could be the culprit. Adjusting it might solve the issue.

That’s great advice! I also recommend inspecting the belt for any wear or cracks. If it looks worn out, replacing it is usually necessary.

I’ve used belt dressing successfully! It quieted the squeak for several months, but I eventually had to replace the belt when it started to show significant signs of wear.

Applying some belt dressing or lubricant can help reduce the noise. Just be careful not to overdo it; a little goes a long way!

Has anyone tried WD-40? I wonder if that would work, or is it too harsh?
