Can I Reprogram My Key Fob for a Different Car?

Definitely! And for some European cars, you might end up paying a premium for reprogramming, sometimes over $300. Crazy, right?

Totally! But is there a reason for that? Is it the technology or just the market?

It’s mostly the technology and the required equipment. Some luxury cars need a scan tool to reset the fob, and those tools are pricey!

Wow, this sounds complicated! I just want to get into my car without all this hassle. Anyone know of a good locksmith in my area?

A locksmith is definitely an option! I found one in my area that charged $75 for new fob programming - much cheaper than the dealership.

Would it be possible for someone to accidentally reprogram a key fob for a different car? That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen!

Haha! Yes, and that would lead to some very awkward situations in a parking lot. Who’s driving my car?!

Just a tip: if you’re reprogramming, make sure to have the correct fob for your car model. Otherwise, it’ll just become a very expensive paperweight!
