E36 M3 Steering Wheel Upgrades – Need Your Thoughts!

I’m looking into upgrading the steering wheel on my E36 M3 and I would love some feedback from the community.

Considerations for Upgrade:

  • Specifications: What are the key specs I should be looking for when selecting a new steering wheel?
  • Compatibility: Will any aftermarket steering wheel fit, or are there specific models that are better suited for the E36 M3?
  • Aesthetics vs. Performance: Should I prioritize looks or handling? Has anyone made a switch and felt a noticeable difference?
  • Buying Options: Where do you usually source your steering wheels? Are there any recommended vendors or brands?

Personal Preferences:

I’m leaning towards something that enhances both the feel of driving and looks good too. Any specific brands or models you’ve had good experiences with?

Feel free to share your experiences, tips, or any cool modifications you’ve done. I appreciate all the help!

Hey everyone! I’m looking for advice on steering wheel upgrades for my E36 M3. What aftermarket options do you guys recommend?

I recently put in an Momo steering wheel, and I love it! Just make sure you get the right hub adapter for the E36. It’s really worth it for the feel.

I second the Momo! Also, if you’re into OEM, the E46 M3 steering wheel can work with an adapter. Slightly thicker and more comfortable.

Adapters can be tricky. Make sure you check the spline count of your stock wheel; the wrong one can cause issues onsafety and fitment.

That sounds interesting! How much modification does it really require? I want to avoid extra hassle!

The E46 setup does need an adapter, but it really is plug-and-play after that. Just a few bolts, and you’re set. Definitely feels more solid!

What about those cheap knockoffs? Anyone had experiences? I’m a little wary about safety, but the price is tempting.

I bought a knockoff once, and let’s just say I got what I paid for. Stiffen up for a real brand!

Good to know! I thought maybe one of the cheaper wheels could be a fun experiment, but safety is a priority with performance upgrades.

Definitely wise advice. Maybe I’ll save up for a reputable brand instead. What about steering wheels suited for track use?

For track use, look into Sparco or OMP. They offer great grip and are built for performance. Just keep in mind you’ll probably need a quick-release setup!

Thanks for the suggestions! Can’t wait to upgrade my E36 M3 steering wheel. It’ll be like a mini-project for the weekend!

Upgrading the steering wheel on an E36 M3 can significantly affect steering feel. A thicker, sportier wheel often provides better grip and feedback, enhancing driver confidence during spirited driving.

Absolutely! Plus, I think a better wheel adds a lot to the aesthetics. Something with a nice design can really elevate the interior vibe!

What about the control aspect? I’ve heard that some after-market wheels can sometimes dampen the road feel. Has anyone experienced this?

It’s true; it mainly depends on the wheel’s design and materials. A lightweight wheel can enhance responsiveness!

If you’re concerned about performance, I’d recommend going for a steering wheel with a flat-bottom design – it allows easier entry and exit!

Lightweight is great, but don’t forget about comfort, guys! I once drove a car with a barebones racing wheel, and it was a bit too much for daily use.

Just keep in mind the diameter of the wheel too. Going too small can make driving feel a bit over-responsive, especially for daily driving.
