Need Help Identifying My LS Engine - Chart or Guide?

I recently got my hands on an LS engine and I’m trying to figure out exactly which model it is. There seems to be a lot of variety with the LS series, and I want to ensure that I’m identifying it correctly for any future modifications or swaps I might consider.

Here’s what I know so far:

  • The casting number seems off, and I’ve read that the VIN can be helpful too
  • I’ve seen a few charts online that show the differences in components among the various LS generations
  • I’m particularly interested in the specs for the injectors as well, so any info on that would be great

The LS1 is a classic! It was in the Corvette and Camaro. Look for the aluminum block and the rectangle port heads for ID. A good chart will clarify that.

Don’t forget about the LS3! It’s got more power and comes with the Modified 6.2L. Great for hot rods or any performance application! You can identify it by its unique timing cover.

That’s right! I think the timing cover has a wider notch compared to the LS1. Anyone have pictures to share?

I find the LS7 fascinating! It’s powerful, meant for the Z06. The best way to ID it? Check for the dry sump system. Just a bit of a beast in performance!

The LS3 usually comes in around 430-435 hp, depending on the application. It’s a nice boost over the LS1!

Don’t underestimate the LS1! It may be older, but it still packs a punch with about 305 hp stock. It’s all about how you tune it post-install.

Are you guys sure the LS1 isn’t better for certain builds? I mean, given its lower weight, it could fit in more compact designs. Just a thought!

Haha, I once mistook an LS engine for a vacuum cleaner because of all the hoses! Make sure to clear out the engine bay for a better view. It might help with identification!
