Upgrading My 3rd Gen 4Runner Tail Lights - Need Some Suggestions!

I’m looking to upgrade the tail lights on my 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner and could use some advice from fellow enthusiasts. I’ve noticed that there are a ton of options available, from LED upgrades to some really cool aftermarket styles that offer a more modern look.

Here are a few things I’m considering:

  • Design and Style: What styles do you all recommend? I’m leaning towards something that pops!
  • Installation: How difficult is the installation process? Do I need any special tools?
  • Functionality: Are there any performance improvements with LED lights that I should be aware of?
  • Where to Buy: Any specific retailers or brands you trust for quality tail lights?

I’d love to hear your experiences, the pros and cons, or any tips you might have. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I’m planning to upgrade my 3rd gen 4Runner tail lights too! I’ve been looking at LED options, specifically from brands likeSpyder and Anzo. They look sleek and offer better visibility. Anyone have experience with those?

I installed Spyder LED tail lights on my 4Runner, and they were straightforward to put in! Just plug and play. The only downside is that they can be pricier than traditional bulbs.

I’m a big fan of the clear lens style! It gives the 4Runner a modern look. But I recommend checking the local regulations since some options might not be street legal in all areas.

Absolutely! I’ve seen some negative feedback on the quality of cheaper brands though. People reported issues like condensation in the units. It’s worth investing a little more for reliability.

That’s so true! My friend had to replace his budget tail lights three times last year! Better to pay upfront than deal with issues later.

I found that wiring was an easy DIY, but you may want to make sure to double-check the polarity before connecting anything. It saved me a lot of headaches during the install.

Has anyone tried sequential tail lights? They seem super cool and offer a unique look compared to standard options. Just wondering if they affect visibility at all.

Yes! I installed sequential ones last month. They’re definitely eye-catching, but I had to rewire them slightly to fit with my 4Runner’s electrical system. Totally worth it for the aesthetic!

That’s great to hear! Did you notice any differences in brightness compared to stock? I want to ensure safety and visibility while upgrading.

I think they’re significantly brighter! Just make sure you don’t overlook the alignment when you install. Otherwise, you might end up with lights pointing in odd directions.

Good point! And also, if you’re venturing into smoke or tinted options, they can reduce visibility during the day.

I’ve got tinted tail lights, and while they look awesome, I’m waiting for a nice sunny day to fully test their brightness! Hoping they aren’t too dim.

I personally think tinted looks cool, but I wonder how it affects insurance claims in case of an accident. Anyone looked into that?

That’s a good question! I think if they’re street legal, you should be fine. But it’s always smart to double-check with your insurance for peace of mind.

I’m also planning to upgrade my 3rd Gen 4Runner tail lights soon! I’ve heard that flickering can be a common issue. Is there a specific type of LED that works best?

It’s definitely common! Flickering can often be traced back to a poor ground connection or incompatible bulbs. Make sure you double-check the connections when upgrading.

If you’re having complete failure issues, it might be the tail light relay. It’s located underneath the driver’s side dash. Just pull it out and check for any corrosion.

Thanks for the tip, Nlee! How do I know if the relay needs replacing or if the issue is elsewhere?

Just measure the voltage at the relay. If there’s power and the lights still don’t work, it’s time to swap out the relay or check the wiring for cuts.
