Which Toyota Avalon Years Should I Avoid and Why?

It’s crazy how each model year can have such different issues! I think the 2006-2009 years have some of the highest recall numbers.

I own a 2014 Avalon, and it’s been solid! Just make sure to stay away from the older models due to their reported issues, especially the early 2000s ones.

Yeah, the 2008 modal had oil consumption issues that are worth paying attention to! It’s not a deal-breaker, but keep it in mind.

I personally love the Avalon, but every car has its lemons! The key is to do your homework before buying.

Funny how car affection sometimes blinds us to the local lemon lot! Always check the VIN for recalls, people!

Thanks for bringing this up! I will definitely avoid anything from 2000 to 2002. Sounds like a recipe for stress.

Remember the Avalon is generally reliable, but some years will have you pulling your hair out. It really pays to ask around and read up!

Great thread! Just curious—what do you guys think of models after 2015? Any noticeable issues?

In general, you might want to avoid the 2000-2004 Toyota Avalon models. They have reported issues with the transmission and engine, leading to higher repair costs. Better to steer clear if you want reliability!

Interesting! I’ve read that the 2011-2012 models have better reliability ratings. Has anyone experienced their maintenance costs?

I second avoiding the 2000-2004 years; they can be quite a money pit. The later models like 2013-2018 are generally more reliable and have lower maintenance costs.

Absolutely! But I found the 2019 and 2020 models to have even fewer problems, plus more features!

I’ve owned an Avalon from 2015, and maintenance has been minimal. I recommend it for anyone looking for better value. But what about the hybrid models? Are they worth it?

Hybrid models can save on fuel, but repairs can be pricier than standard gasoline models. To add, the 2017 hybrids seem to have a solid reliability reputation.

Definitely avoid 2010. My friend had constant issues with the steering system. It’s best to look at 2013 onwards for hassle-free ownership.

Why do some people call the Avalon boring? It’s such a comfy ride! Of course, that doesn’t mean I want constant repairs. What do you all think?

Ha! Maybe they just prefer flashy cars. But reliability is key; I’m all for the practical choice!

I’d be cautious of the 2006 model as well; it had fuel system issues. It’s lighter on the wallet to choose a later model instead.

Good point! I’ve been hearing mixed reviews about the 2007 too; anyone have personal experience?

The 2007 isn’t fantastic but not the worst either. I’d prefer a newer model, but it depends on your budget.
