AC Going In and Out in My Car - Need Help!

I’ve been experiencing some frustrating issues with my car’s air conditioning lately. It seems to be going in and out, either not cooling at all or getting really cold for a bit and then suddenly warm again. I’m not sure if it’s a problem with the compressor, the refrigerant level, or something else entirely.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Check the refrigerant level: Is it low? Might need a recharge.
  • Inspect the AC compressor: Is it engaging and disengaging correctly?
  • Look out for strange noises: Hissing or clunking might indicate a problem.

Questions I Have:

  • Has anyone else dealt with this? What were your solutions?
  • Any recommendations for a good mechanic who specializes in AC repairs?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can share! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

I had the same problem last summer! It turned out to be a low refrigerant level. The AC works perfectly now after a refill.

Did you check for leaks, too? Sometimes it’s a slow leak that causes the refrigerant to drop repeatedly.

That’s right! Also, unusual noises from the AC might indicate a failing compressor. Have you noticed any strange sounds?

My AC was blowing hot air intermittently, and I found out it was just a clogged cabin filter. A quick clean made a big difference!

Interesting! I never thought a cabin filter could affect the air temperature. I’ll have to check mine.

Honestly, the AC system can be so finicky! Sometimes, just resetting the system can help with these glitches.

Resetting? How do you do that? Mine’s been acting up and I’d love to try anything at this point!

It usually involves disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Just be careful with your electronics!

When discussing potential problems, don’t forget about the relay switch. A failing switch could lead to inconsistent AC performance!

So true! I once thought my AC was broken but it turned out to be just a bad relay. Lucky catch!

I’ve been having the same issue! It seems like whenever it’s super hot outside, my AC goes from freezing to hot in a matter of minutes. Is it just me?

It might be a refrigerant issue. High temps can cause the AC system to struggle if it’s low on coolant. Have you checked the levels?

External humidity can really affect AC performance. I noticed in humid conditions, my car struggles to cool down. Has anyone else experienced this?

Absolutely! Humidity can increase the amount of moisture in the air, making it harder for the AC system to do its job. Have you considered using the recirculation mode?

I always thought the age of the car mattered too. Older vehicles might struggle more in extreme temps. Anyone with a classic car facing AC woes?

You’re spot on! I have a 2002 model, and I feel like it’s always having a heat stroke in summer. Regular maintenance is key to keeping it functioning.

It’s important to check your cabin air filter too. A clogged filter can make your AC work overtime. Have you checked yours recently?

Good point! I didn’t realize how much impact a simple filter change could have on performance. I’ll schedule one soon.

We all know that car ACs are the vehicles’ version of ice cream on a hot day—unexpected meltdowns just ruin the fun. What’s the craziest AC failure story you have?
