What’s Going On with My XT5?

I recently started getting a warning message on my dashboard that says ‘Steering Assist Reduced’ on my 2018 Cadillac XT5. It’s been a bit concerning since the steering feels very stiff and unresponsive at times. I’ve done some research and found that many people have faced this issue too.

Symptoms I’ve Noticed:

  • Warning message appearing suddenly while driving.
  • Steering feels much heavier, especially during low-speed maneuvers.
  • No prior issues with steering before this warning.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  1. Checked Power Steering Fluid: The fluid levels seem okay, but I’m not sure if there are any leaks.
  2. Battery Check: I’ve noticed that when the battery is low, it can affect steering assist, so I made sure to check that too.
  3. Checked for Error Codes: I used an OBD-II scanner, and it returned a couple of codes, but they didn’t seem too explicit.

Looking for Advice:

Have any of you experienced this before? What steps did you take to resolve it? Did you end up needing to replace any parts, or did it turn out to be something simpler? I’d really appreciate any help as I want to avoid costly repairs if possible.

Definitely check your fluid levels before diving into electronic issues. In my case, it was just a low power steering fluid situation. Easy fix!

It could also be the steering rack itself. I’ve had steering assist issues, and the dealer said it was a problem with the electrical system. Quite costly too!
