Geo Tracker Engine Swap Options - Need Advice!

I’m considering swapping the engine in my Geo Tracker and I’m looking for some experienced advice. I’ve been hearing about various engine options, like V6 and diesel, but I’m not sure what would work best without too many modifications. Here’s what I’m curious about:

Questions:

  • Engine Compatibility: What engine swaps have you guys done? Any recommendations for specific makes or models that fit well?
  • Modifications Needed: What kind of modifications should I expect? Are there significant changes to the wiring or mounts?
  • Performance: How do these engine swaps affect performance and reliability? Anyone had either great experiences or total nightmares?

If you have done this swap or are knowledgeable about it, please share your thoughts and any tips you may have. Photos of your setups would be awesome too! Really looking forward to hearing about your projects and what worked best for you!

I’m looking to swap the engine in my Geo Tracker too! I heard that a Suzuki Vitara engine is a great option due to compatibility and performance upgrades. Has anyone tried this?

I’ve done the Vitara swap! It’s a solid upgrade. You’ll enjoy the additional horsepower, but make sure to check the wiring harness and ECU compatibility. It can be tricky!

I’ve heard of folks putting a 1.8L engine from a Honda Civic into these trackters. Anyone have thoughts on that or experience with it?

A Honda engine swap sounds ambitious! It would definitely add power, but you’ll face challenges with fitting the engine bay. You’ll need custom mounts.

I’m all for innovative swaps, but keep in mind the complexity. Don’t underestimate the time it might take to get everything just right!

I’ve been looking into the Chevy 4-cylinder as a simpler swap. It’s reliable and has solid aftermarket support. Just throwing it out there!

Great suggestion! I love the Chevy engines for their simplicity. Plus, they’re easier to source parts for if anything goes wrong.

Has anyone considered electric swaps? It’s the future, and it may be easier than we think with all the new parts available.

Electric? Now that’s a plot twist! I love it. Definitely something to think about, but you’ll need solid battery management systems.

I’m leaning towards keeping it simple with a stock engine. Swapping engines can lead to so many unforeseen issues. The original engine is tried and true!

That’s a fair point. Sometimes the hassle of swapping isn’t worth it. A good tune-up can make a big difference too.

I think we should keep this discussion lively! What about swapping in a turbo? Those upgrades can really make your Tracker pop!

Question for the group: If you could do any engine swap without regard for cost, what engine would it be?

Well, probably a V6 for sheer power! But it might result in some serious modification work. Which could be a headache.

I’ve done a couple of engine swaps on my Geo Tracker. You’ll need basic tools like wrenches, sockets, and a hoist. Make sure you have a repair manual handy too! It helps with the wiring and connections.

What kind of hoist do you recommend? I was thinking of using either a chain hoist or an engine crane. Any thoughts?

I’ve had success with an engine crane. It’s more stable and easier to maneuver. Just ensure you’re using the right straps to avoid any mishaps!

What are some common mistakes you guys made on your first swap? I’d love to hear your cautionary tales!

Definitely not aligning the engine properly! I had to redo everything. Also, label your connectors as you go. It saves a lot of headaches later.
