I’m looking into buying a Toyota 4Runner and have heard rumblings about which model years stand out, especially regarding reliability and performance.
Questions I Have:
Which years are known for having fewer issues?
Are there specific years with better features or more modern tech?
How does the performance vary across the years?
Things to Consider:
I plan on using this vehicle for off-roading and daily driving.
I’m keen on hearing from current owners or anyone with experience across different model years.
If you’ve owned a 4Runner or have researched various years, I’d love to hear your insights. Let’s get a solid discussion going here!
I’ve owned a 2012 4Runner and it’s been extremely reliable. The V6 engine is powerful yet efficient, plus the off-road capabilities are top-notch. Highly recommend that year!

I totally agree! The 2010 and 2011 models also have a solid reputation for durability. I’ve never had major issues with mine.
I’ve heard that the 4Runner from 2003 to 2009 are known for their exceptional longevity. Owners seem to love how they hold up over time with minimal issues.
For me, the 2015 model really stands out. My friends have never encountered any significant problems with theirs. It’s a great blend of modern tech and ruggedness!
I had a 2007 model that went well over 200,000 miles without any major repairs. Those are definitely some of the best years!

I’ve heard mixed reviews about the 2018 model. While some love it, others have complained about electronic issues. Anyone else experience this?

Ugh, yes! I’ve experienced dashboard glitches in my 2018 4Runner. It’s frustrating given how reliable the earlier models are.
The 2014 model was actually the first year with the updated exterior design, and it’s still very reliable. I’m a fan of the interior upgrades too!
I think we can agree that the 4Runner’s reputation for reliability spans decades, but it’s always best to do your research on specific years. What do you guys think about '95 to '02 models?

Those earlier models have a cult following for a reason, but I wouldn’t rely on them for daily driving. Better suited for collectors in my opinion.

Haha! If you want to survive the teenage years, maybe go with a leather interior. Easy to clean and looks classy!

I’ve owned a 2003 4Runner for years, and its V6 engine delivers great power for off-roading. Definitely one of the better years!
I’ve heard the 2002 model is great too, especially with its handling. Has anyone driven both?
The 2010-2020 models have impressive features, like superior tech and safety ratings. They really modernized the 4Runner without losing its ruggedness.

The 1996-2002 4Runner is known for its off-road capability and durability. I think they strike a perfect balance between nostalgia and performance.
I agree, nlee! Those models just have a classic feel. But does that nostalgia come with some reliability issues?

I’ve driven both the 2007 and 2015 models. The 2015 definitely has better features, but the 2007 offers raw driving pleasure. It’s tough to choose!
