Why is my car still running after I turned it off?

I’m facing a really strange issue with my car lately. Whenever I turn off the ignition, the engine doesn’t completely shut off. It keeps running for a few minutes before it finally stops! This is really concerning, and I’m not sure what’s causing it.

Here are some details about my situation:

  • Car Make/Model: 2010 Honda Civic
  • Recent Repairs: I recently had some electrical work done, but I can’t remember if this issue started after that.
  • Frequency: This happens almost every time I turn it off now.

What I’ve considered so far:

  • Ignition switch issues: Could it be that the switch is faulty?
  • Electrical problems: Maybe something is short-circuiting?
  • Fuel system malfunction: I read that fuel pumps can sometimes run too long.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has experienced this or knows what might be happening. How can I troubleshoot this? Is it safe to drive until I can fix it? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you might be dealing with a fuel system issue, like a sticking fuel injector. This can cause fuel to keep entering the combustion chamber even after the ignition is turned off.

That’s a good point! A defective ignition switch can also play a huge role. Sometimes, it just doesn’t completely cut off the electrical flow.

I’ve heard of cars running due to a faulty relay. If the relay stays engaged, it can continue to allow the engine to receive power. It’s worth checking.

Definitely! I’ve had a similar experience before. It was a nightmare, but the repair was surprisingly easy once we identified the faulty component.

This is such a common issue! Make sure to check the electrical connections and fuses too. Sometimes a simple fix can solve the problem.

I never considered that! If I might add, worn out spark plugs could also cause strange behaviors, like misfiring, which may contribute to this issue.

I’m curious, have you noticed any other symptoms? Sometimes accompanying issues can point towards a specific problem with your car.

Well, it’s not always clear cut. Could it just be your car’s way of saying it wants to keep going? Just kidding! But really, getting a diagnostic test can provide more insight.

Good advice! Electrical faults can be tricky. Is there any unusual behavior with your headlights or dashboard lights?

Reflecting on my own experiences, cars can be quite mysterious. One small malfunction can lead to unexpected behavior. It’s worth diving deeper into these issues!

Hey! If your car is still running after you turned it off, it could be a serious issue like an ignition problem or a fault in the electrical system. This is definitely not safe! You might want to consult a mechanic ASAP.

You’re right, megan20! Aside from the ignition issues, there are real safety risks. For instance, a running engine can overheat and potentially start a fire. It’s scary to think about!

This isn’t something to brush off. If the engine is still running, there’s also a risk of the vehicle moving unexpectedly. It’s great that you’re seeking advice!

Exactly! Plus, residual heat from a non-stopped engine can lead to overheating of other components, which can become a fire hazard. Safety first!

I’m just wondering, have you noticed any strange smells or sounds coming from the engine? They can be indicators of overheating or other serious issues!

Good point, haleyjason! Keeping an eye on sounds and smells is crucial. Sometimes, it might just be an electrical glitch, but better safe than sorry!

It could even lead to an accident if it rolls away! Please, make sure to have it checked. It’s better to be proactive than reactive when it comes to car problems!

Honestly, it’s like a horror movie plot! Your car won’t stop! It’s funny but really concerning too. Hope you get it sorted out soon!

Definitely! And let’s not forget about the personal safety risks while trying to deal with a runaway car. This is no joke!
