Need Help with NC MX5 Battery Tray Hold Down Bolt!

I’m currently working on my NC Mazda MX-5 and need some insights about the battery tray hold down bolt. I’m not sure about the specifications or if there’s a specific part number I should be looking for.

Here are a few things I’m hoping to clarify:

  • Specifications: What are the dimensions or torque specifications for the battery tray hold down bolt?
  • Part Numbers: Is there a particular part number I should reference when looking to purchase one?
  • Installation Tips: Any pointers on installing or replacing this bolt without damaging the battery tray?
  • Purchase Recommendations: Where is the best place to buy this part, or does anyone have a recommended aftermarket option?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I’m trying to make sure my battery is securely fastened for both performance and safety. Thanks in advance!

The battery tray hold down bolt is typically M6 x 1.0. You might want to check your local hardware store or Mazda dealership for the exact part!

It’s M6 for sure! Just make sure you’re getting a rust-resistant material if you live in a wet climate. Trust me, it pays off in the long run!

Great suggestion! I’ve seen stainless steel bolts work well, but make sure they’re the right grade. Grade 8.8 should do the trick!

Does anyone know the length of the bolt as well? I don’t want to buy something that’s too short or too long.

Yeah, the typical length is around 20mm for the MX-5 battery hold down. Make sure to double-check before buying!

Awesome, thanks! Does anyone have experience with aftermarket options?

Aftermarket parts can be hit or miss. I had trouble with one that didn’t fit my NC properly. The OEM part is always a safe bet if you’re unsure.

Good point! I guess stick with OEM unless you want to roll the dice?

What’s the worst that could happen, right? Just kidding! Don’t want my battery flying around while driving!

Haha, exactly! Just be cautious and ensure the proper torque specs are followed during installation.

I’ve had my share of issues with the NC MX5 battery tray. Corrosion is definitely a pain! Make sure to check that hold-down bolt for rust before you tighten it!

Absolutely! I found that using some anti-corrosion spray can really help prolong the life of those bolts. It’s a simple fix that makes a big difference.

I had issues with the threads stripping when I first got my MX5. A helicoil kit saved me! Just make sure you clean out the old threads properly before you insert it.

Great tip! I was considering using some thread repair methods. Did you have to tap the hole first?

Yes, definitely! Tapping is essential for that helicoil to fit properly. It took me a couple of tries but worked perfectly in the end.

My battery tray never fit quite right. Anyone else experience that? A slight adjustment made all the difference for me, especially on misaligned mounts.

That’s weird! Are you using the original tray or an aftermarket one? I’ve heard the fit can vary quite a bit.

I bought an aftermarket tray. I had to drill new holes to get it to fit snugly. It’s worth it though! Just make sure to measure twice.
