Best winter tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee

The best tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee today should be able to offer excellent driving dynamics, outstanding comfort and good on-road manners are a must. That could only be highway and touring all-season tires.

One of the pioneers in the SUV category with a unibody chassis, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has almost a cult following since its inception in 1993. Today it is considered as one of the best vehicles in the mid-size SUV category thanks to excellent driving dynamics, usable off-road traction, and interior with plenty of room for cargo and passengers.

While the Grand Cherokee is certainly an excellent vehicle, choosing tires for it may cause a headache. Given the fact that this muscular SUV can be used both on and off-road, owners often can’t choose between better on-road handling and off-road traction. That said, most Grand Cherokee owners don’t use their vehicles for serious off-road terrain – only for lighter purposes. Also, the percentage of people that are still using their Grand Cherokees as an all-terrain vehicle is probably diminished by now. Jeep already has the Wrangler and the Cherokee, both of which are more usable in off-road conditions.

The best tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee today should be able to offer excellent driving dynamics and outstanding comfort. Remember, Jeep positions the Grand Cherokee as a premium vehicle, so good on-road manners are a must. Only if the tire satisfies those qualities, then we can talk about off-road traction.

To help you with choosing the best Grand Cherokee tires, I’ve created a Top 10 list which contains tires that I think will get the most out of your vehicle. Before we do that though, let’s first have a look at what things you should look out for when buying tires, as not all tires suit the needs of every Grand Cherokee owner.

What to look for when choosing a set of best Jeep Grand Cherokee tires in 2024?

Best Tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee

When you’re in the process of looking for new tires for your Grand Cherokee, the first thing you need to ask yourself is what’s the climate in your area. The main distinction between different tire types is the temperature range at which they give the best traction and grip. For example, summer tires work only in warmer climates, while winter tires work in colder climates. Of course, there are also all-season tires, which work in a broader range.

Then, there is another classification – the type of surface they might be used on. Highway, touring and high-performance tires are made specifically for use on the street and highway, all-terrain tires are designed to be used both on and off the road, while mud-terrain and off-road tires are designed to be mostly used in off-road conditions.

In the end, tires are classified by how they behave. For example, high-performance tires are designed to give you the best grip in the corners and traction when accelerating. Highway and touring tires, on the other hand, are designed to offer a combination of traction, comfort, and long-lasting tread life.

With all that said, the best tire type for most Grand Cherokee owners are highway and touring all-season tires. The best highway and touring all-season tires have very good traction in both dry and wet conditions, they are very quiet and comfortable, and have the longest tread life of all other tire types. Some of them also work in light snow and in colder conditions, but they should only be used when you’re surprised by the snow.

High-performance summer tires offer much better grip and traction than highway and touring tires, both in dry and wet conditions. However, this is valid only when the temperature is higher than 50oF. Also, high-performance summer tires are not as comfortable, nor as quiet as highway and touring tires, and they don’t last nearly as much. Due to their properties, these tires are a better choice for Grand Cherokee V8 and Grand Cherokee SRT.

Winter tires, as their name suggests, are only designed to be used in colder climates. They offer the best traction in the snow too but tend to be noisier on the highway. Winter tires are available as “normal” which are similar to touring tires, and high-performance variants. The former is the best choice for V6 models, while the latter is a better choice for V8 and SRT variants.

If you’re interested in off-road driving, then all-terrain tires are the best fit for the Grand Cherokee. The best all-terrain tires offer good on-road manners and are comfortable and quiet. They also offer good off-road traction that will satisfy most drivers out there. With all that said, due to the fact that most Grand Cherokee owners don’t really care about off-road driving, I’ll include only two all-terrain models in the list.

Suffice to say, mud-terrain and specialized off-road tires aren’t a good fit for the Grand Cherokee and won’t be included in the list below. I know, there are some Grand Cherokee owners on the forums that think about big tires with no lift, but the truth is that they will rub against the body of the vehicle.

Top 10 Best Tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2024

Touring tires are an excellent choice for long road trips, and one of the best in that category is the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza Plus. Due to the fact that Bridgestone designed this tire to be primarily comfortable and quiet, I think that it is the best choice for owners of Grand Cherokee V6. Those who own V8 or SRT models should go down the list – there are tires for you too.

According to Bridgestone, the symmetric tread pattern of the Dueler H/L Alenza Plus was tuned to enhance comfort and reduce noise. The ride quality is further enhanced by the polyester cords that stabilize the sidewalls. The notched shoulder blocks and the continuous center rib aid stability at higher speeds, which helps the driver easily keep the vehicle in a straight line on the highway. The wide circumferential grooves, lateral notches, and sipes help in wet conditions and light snow. That said, considering the fact that the Grand Cherokee uses wider tires, the traction in snow will be severely limited.

As with most Bridgestone tires, everything the manufacturer says translates into the real world. The Dueler H/L Alenza Plus is whisper quiet on the highway – perhaps the quietest tire you can have for the Grand Cherokee V6. Despite that, it still offers very good traction and grip in the corners, both in dry and wet conditions, and it is very stable at higher speeds.

Another positive for the Bridgestone is that it comes with 80,000-mile tread warranty, which is one of the highest in the industry. And it’s not only the warranty – thousands of Dueler H/L Alenza Plus owners report excellent tread life and durability.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S

Best towing all-season tire for Jeep Grand Cherokee

Michelin Defender LTX MS

With load range E models available, the Michelin Defender is a great tire for those who plan to tow with their Grand Cherokee, but also for Grand Cherokee V6 owners. It is strong and durable, yet it still offers high levels of traction. The Defender LTX M/S is an all-season tire that is capable of tackling any type of weather you throw at it, be it dry, wet or snowy. It is also very durable – it comes with 70,000-mile tread warranty (50,000-miles for models with higher speed ratings), which is a great result for a tire that can be used for towing.

Michelin achieved toughness and excellent performance thanks to the Evertread compound with high-density Active Sipes that help in harsh weather, lateral grooves for better water drainage, and the MaxTouch construction that evens the force over the entire tire, thus making it more stable at higher speeds, even with a lot of weight on its shoulders. In the real world, it is evident that all these design decisions give the Defender LTX high levels of grip in the corners and excellent traction in wet conditions. When compared to its closest competitors, it also has the shortest braking distance and the best stability at higher speeds. This tire is also usable in light snow, which is another plus.

The best thing about the Defender LTX is that it is very comfortable as well. Being a highway tire, it offers excellent comfort over bumps, and it’s very quiet at higher speeds. Finally, the price may be higher than some competitors, but this is still a Michelin tire and one that excels in almost every conceivable measurement. Highly recommended!

Michelin Premier LTX

Best touring tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee V8

Michelin Premier LTX

While the Defender LTX is an excellent tire for V6 versions of the Grand Cherokee, those who have the more powerful V8 versions may want to try the Premier LTX. This tire delivers much better handling in almost all conditions, as well as excellent ride comfort and 60,000-mile tread warranty – a very good result for a tire aimed at more powerful vehicles.

To achieve all these things, the company used their Michelin Total Performance Technology that utilizes a lot of innovative technologies to achieve high levels of grip and traction, better fuel economy, long tread life, and quiet rolling. The most important of those technologies is the extreme silica and sunflower oil compound, molded into symmetric tread design with continuous center rib, notched intermediate ribs, and linked shoulder blocks.

Michelin even used their EverGrip Technology in the Premier LTX that utilizes Expanding Rain Grooves around the circumference and Emerging Grooves across the shoulders that help the tire keep being usable in heavy rain even after the tread wears down.

In the real world, all these technologies work as advertised. The Premier LTX has very good traction in dry and wet conditions while offering very responsive and precise handling. It is also very useful even when older, and it is one of the most comfortable tires in its category. For all those reasons, I think that it is the best choice for owners of the Grand Cherokee V8 who use their vehicles for long road trips and want an all-around tire that scores highly in every category.

Falken Ziex STZ05

Best high-performance all-season tire for Jeep Grand Cherokee V8

Falken Ziex STZ05

While the Premier LTX offers very balanced driving experience, it is still not a high-performance tire. For Grand Cherokee owners who want more responsive handling, akin to a sports car, then the Falken Ziex STZ05 is a great choice. A set of these tires will give you much higher levels of grip in the corners than touring or highway tires, both in dry and wet conditions. The only area where the Falken falls short is traction in snow, but that is expected from a high-performance tire.

If you’ve never experienced a high-performance tire on your Grand Cherokee V8, be ready for a treat. The handling will be much more agile and responsive, giving you an elevated feeling. You can also achieve higher speeds in the corners, and the vehicle will brake much better. Thanks to the double taper cut tread blocks; the Ziex STZ05 also offers excellent traction in very wet conditions, which further enhances its usability. Despite the fact that it is not a touring tire, the Ziex STZ05 is still pretty comfortable and quiet on the road.

That said, the 50,000-mile tread warranty may be limiting for some, and also the fact that these tires aren’t useful for towing. For the price, though, there is not much to complain about.

Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2

Best winter tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee V6

Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2

For those who live in areas with harsh winters, a set of proper winter tires is a must. I find the Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 to be the best winter tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee due to their balanced results in every category. With a set of these tires, you can expect excellent traction in freezing weather, dry or wet, and especially in the snow.

Bridgestone’s Blizzak line is so successful in cold weather thanks to the NanoPro Tech Multicell compound that features a water-loving hydrophilic coating. How can water-loving compound work good in the snow you ask? Well, it takes the water out of the snow, making it softer, which greatly improves traction, grip and braking distances. On top of that, Bridgestone installed microscopic bite particles in the Blizzak DM-V2, so that it can bite into snow or ice. The Multicell compound is also extremely pliable in lower temperatures, which is another important trait for a winter tire.

Another great design decision is the tread design with 15% more aggressive block edges than the predecessor, which additionally help improving traction in rain and snow. The Blizzak DM-V2 even has a tread depth indicator that shows when the NanoPro Tech Multicell Compound is used and when the tire only uses normal winter compound, which makes it usable in the snow even after thousands of miles driven. The ratio is 55:45 in favor of the NanoPro Tech Multicell compound.

Continental TerrainContact A/T

Best all-terrain tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee

We’ve already discussed that most of the Grand Cherokee owners will never venture out of the road, but there are still some who do that. If you’re one of the adventurers, then the Continental TerrainContact A/T is the best choice for the Grand Cherokee. That’s totally unexpected because it is the first Continental tire in this category and immediately it’s a success.

As with most of its new models, Continental used their proprietary treat compound with +Silane additives that do wonders in wet conditions. Seriously, Continental tires are probably the best on the market right now in wet conditions, both in light and heavy rain. The TerrainContact is also very good in the handling department, offering a very crisp and responsive ride for an all-terrain tire. The TractionPlus technology meanwhile brings very good traction in off-road conditions, almost on the level of the best all-terrain tires.

The reason why in my opinion this is the best all-terrain tire for the Grand Cherokee is a comfort. Thanks to the ComfortRide technology, the TerrainContact blows other competitors out of the water when it comes to riding comfort and quietness. That’s not something you can say about most all-terrain tires. Driving on the highway with a set of these tires is almost indistinguishable from highway tires, which is high praise indeed.

Another positive for the Continental is that it comes with fantastic 60,000-mile tread warranty – most competitors offer warranty in the 40,000- to -50,000-mile range.

Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV

Best winter tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 and SRT

Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV

While the Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 is the best winter tire for Grand Cherokee V6, if you own a V8 version or the muscular SRT, then the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV is the best choice for you. The reason for this is that it is a high-performance tire with winter-focused compound molded into a directional tread pattern with a lot of sipes, broad shoulder blocks and a wide, central groove.

All these things make the Alpin 5 SUV an extremely good tire in the corners in colder conditions, with crisp and responsive handling and high levels of grip. Traction in snow and on ice is also on a very high level, up there with the best winter tires on the market. This tire even comes with a specialized undertread that reduces rolling resistance for better fuel economy.

The Pilot Alpin 5 SUV is covered by 30,000-mile tread warranty, which is a good result for a high-performance winter tire, but it also comes at a very high price.

Continental CrossContact UHP

Best tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Continental CrossContact UHP

$70 Prepaid Mastercard by mail when you purchase a set of four select Continental Control Contact tires.

Valid through Sept 30, 2020

Available at DiscountTireDirect.com

If you own the muscular Grand Cherokee SRT (lucky you), then you need a proper set of high-performance tires to match the power coming from the monstrous V8 in the front. The Continental CrossContact UHP can do just that – it is specifically designed for sporty and powerful SUVs such as the SRT.

Thanks to that, it offers astonishing levels of grip in the corners, both in dry and wet conditions. It is also extremely responsive and crisp, giving your Grand Cherokee SRT the much-needed athleticism. Traction is also outstanding, even under hard acceleration. The CrossContact UHP works very well in wet conditions too. It resists hydroplaning like a champ and is glued to the road in damp conditions. Due to the all-season moniker, the CrossContact UHP is even usable in cold weather. That said, while Continental advertises use in light snow, I recommend against doing that with a set of these tires.

Despite the fact that it is focused on performance rather than comfort, the Continental is pretty quiet on the highway. What it is not is durable – it doesn’t come with any treadwear warranty, and you should be lucky if it lasts more than 25,000-miles.

BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2

Best extreme all-terrain tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee

BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2

If you want a more focused off-road driving experience, then the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 is a better choice than the Continental TerrainContact. While the BFGoodrich doesn’t offer the driving experience of its main competitors on the road, it shines in off-road conditions. This tire works on every surface it will encounter – gravel, rocky terrain, sand, and even mud. Despite not being made for snow driving, it can even tackle some light snow with ease. It is also very pretty durable – it comes with 50,000-mile tread warranty.

General Grabber HTS60

Best budget all-season tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee V6

General Grabber HTS60

Up to $100 Prepaid Visa by mail when you purchase a set of four select General tires.

Valid through Oct 31, 2020

Available at Tirerack.comDiscounttire.com, Tirebuyer.com

If you’re on a tighter budget but still want a set of tires that will offer all-season traction and comfortable driving experience, then the General Grabber HTS60 is a great choice. The performance it offers is only slightly worse than premium competitors from Michelin, Bridgestone, and Continental, yet the price is much lower – you can save up to $200 for a set of four tires. Despite the lower price, the Grabber HTS60 still comes with excellent 65,000-mile tread warranty.

Conclusion

The top 10 list of best tires for Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2024 above contains offerings for every type of Grand Cherokee owner. That said, if you want the best experience, you should always choose a set of tires according to your needs, the weather in your area, and the Grand Cherokee version you have. Only then you will be completely satisfied with the performance of the tires.

  1. Very good comparison. BUT, I still can\’t make up my mind. I have 265x50x20 Frontera tires that came with the vehicle with 42k on them. I would like the best all season tire that is the best available in the snow too and still excels in the other categories. What is the best and does one exist?

    • I found the Frontera to be horrible in Snow – at least in Colorado. I switched to the Michelin Defender LTX and it was a significant improvement, all around, including snow. Meanwhile, my son put Yokohoma Geolander G015 on his and he claims they are better than the Michelin Defenders.
